2020 International Conference on Materials in Civil Engineering was held on October 23-25, 2020 via online platform due to the pandemic of COVID-19. It aims to provide an international platform for scholars, practicing engineers, designers, researchers and other practitioners who are interested in all aspects relating to properties and applications of civil engineering materials.
here were nearly 40 experts and scholars from 4 countries and regions attending the MICE2020 online conference. The conference consisted of three parts: keynote presentations, oral presentations and poster presentations. Professor Qing Wang, from Shandong University of Science and Technology, China, presided over the morning conference. Professor Mohamed Abdel Kader El Gelany Ismail, from Miami College of Henan University, took charge of the afternoon conference.
We were honored to invite four sophisticated keynote speakers to deliver keynote speeches during the conference.
Prof. Qing Wang, our first keynote speaker, representing Shandong University of Science and Technology, China, held a speech on “Study on Flexible Intelligent Sensing Materials for Structural Damage Monitoring”.
In this talk, the performance of the polymer substrate of the flexible film smart sensing material for damage monitoring was first investigated experimentally. And it was found that the selected polymer substrate has excellent light permeability and good self-cleaning performance, which laid the foundation for the preparation and research of flexible sensing materials.
The second keynote speaker, Prof. Shahria Alam, from The University of British Columbia (Okanagan Campus), Canada, delivered a wonderful speech on “Utilizing shape memory alloys (SMAs) for our next generation smart civil infrastructure”.
This presentation examined the fundamental characteristics of SMAs, the constitutive material models of SMAs, and the factors influencing the engineering properties of SMAs. Some of the potential applications of SMAs in buildings and bridges were discussed, and he also explained different alternatives for the application of SMAs.
The third keynote speaker, Prof. Faiz Uddin Ahmed Shaikh, from Curtin University, Australia, gave a speech on “Effect of nano calcium carbonate on compressive strength development and durability properties of high volume slag and slag-fly ash blended concretes”.
His speech focused on the effect of nano-CaCO3 (NC) on the compressive strengths and durability properties of high volume slag (HVS) and high volume slag-fly ash (HVS-FA) blended concretes.
The fourth and also the last keynote speaker, Prof. Mohamed Abdel Kader El Gelany Ismail, from Miami College of Henan University, talked about “Recycled waste materials in reinforced concrete construction: developing research and wealth prospects”.
This talk discussed different types of industrial, agricultural and/or natural wastes, some have been already utilized in the concrete industry while many others demonstrate promise for future use.

After keynote presentations, there were 15 oral presentations and poster presentations, oral speakers and poster presenters shared their latest research results with the audience, the audience actively and enthusiastically participated in by asking questions and voting.
The first oral speaker, Jiankun Qin, from China University of Petroleum (East China), delivered a speech on” Effect of various testing parameters on the experimental evaluation of oil well cement cured under simulated downhole conditions”.
The second oral speaker, Lijun Sun, from China University of Petroleum (East China), gave a speech on” Effects of temperature and water-to-cement ratio on autogenous shrinkage of oil well cement”.
The third oral speaker, Ning Wang, from Shandong University of Science and Technology, delivered a speech on” Fabrication and application of superhydrophobic micro/nano functional materials in civil engineering”.
The fourth oral speaker, Shuangshuang Xu, from Shandong University of Science and Technology, held a speech on” The fabrication and application of building oil - water separation materials”.
The fifth oral speaker, Yao Li, from Shandong University of Science and Technology, held a speech on” Principles and applications of microcapsule-based visualization smart materials for damage detection”.
The sixth oral speaker, Lulu Lei, from Shandong University of Science and Technology, gave a speech on” Fabrication of superhydrophobic concrete used in marine environment with anti-corrosion and stable mechanical properties”.
The seventh oral speaker, Mingya Zhang, from Shandong University of Science and Technology, talked about” Wettability behavior of nanodroplets on solid surfaces with hierarchical nanostructures”.
The eighth and also the last oral speaker, Huihui He, from Zhejiang Light Industrial Product Inspection and Research Institute, shared his latest research on” Effective removal of lead(II) migrated from kitchen faucets using multi-slice feathery γ-alumina”.

We would like to express our deepest feelings of respect and gratitude to the outstanding keynote speakers, oral speakers as well as all the audiences. MICE2020 online conference was held successfully because of their great supports and help.
